Date:

12-year-old girl in Renti and 42-year-old motorcyclist in Volos die in road accidents

Two separate fatal road accidents occurred in Greece overnight, claiming the lives of a 12-year-old girl in Renti and a 42-year-old motorcyclist in Volos, while a 26-year-old woman was left injured. Authorities in both cities are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding these tragic incidents, with eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage playing a crucial role.

Renti tragedy: 12-year-old girl dies after being hit by car

A heartbreaking accident unfolded in the early hours in the area of Renti, Athens, when a 12-year-old girl was fatally struck by a car driven by a 21-year-old man who lost control of his vehicle.

The incident took place at the intersection of Thivon Avenue and Karapitsseri Street, near the Renti shopping centre. The young girl, of Roma origin, was reportedly alone at the time and is believed to have left a nearby Roma settlement.

At approximately 1:45 a.m., the driver was heading downhill on Thivon Avenue when he lost control of the car at the junction with Karapitsseri Street. The vehicle hit the child, forcefully throwing her against a concrete pillar supporting a nearby bridge.

Severely injured, the girl was transported to Nikaia General State Hospital, where doctors made desperate efforts to save her life. Unfortunately, despite their best attempts, she succumbed to her injuries a few hours later.

The driver remained at the scene, was arrested, and underwent a blood test for alcohol testing.

The Traffic Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining footage from local surveillance cameras as well as collecting eyewitness testimonies to determine the cause of the crash.

Eyewitness testimony

A witness to the tragic accident shared their account with Greek TV station ANT1, stating:
“I heard a bang, went outside and saw the car up on the kerb. I saw smoke. The child was lying next to the car.”

The witness added that there was uncertainty over whether the girl had been sitting at the spot or attempting to cross the road at the time. They also observed that the driver appeared extremely distressed and was crying.

Volos fatal collision: Motorcyclist killed, passenger injured

In a separate incident in Volos, a 42-year-old man lost his life in a serious road collision involving his motorbike and a car. A 26-year-old woman who was riding as a passenger on the motorbike was injured in the crash.

The accident occurred just before midnight on Larisis Avenue, within the urban area of the city. The motorbike collided with a passenger car in what was described as a violent impact. The force of the crash flung the motorcyclist some distance from his vehicle, causing him to hit the road with great force.

The injured man was immediately transferred to Achillopouleio Hospital in Volos, where he was intubated upon arrival. However, despite emergency medical intervention, he passed away shortly after being admitted.

The woman riding with him was also injured in the crash and is receiving medical attention.

The Volos Traffic Police are conducting a full investigation into the cause of this deadly accident.
