Extreme heat: Temperatures hit 43°C with orange warning issued

An orange warning for extreme maximum temperature, valid from 12 noon to 5pm on Wednesday, was issued on Tuesday afternoon by the Meteorological Department.

According to the warning, the maximum temperature is expected to rise to around 43°C inland, and around 34°C in the higher mountainous areas.

Detailed forecast:

A seasonal low-pressure system and a warm air mass are affecting the region.

Today, the weather will be mostly clear. Winds will blow mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, and in the afternoon along windward coastal areas, up to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough. The temperature will rise to 43°C inland, around 36°C on the southern, eastern and northern coasts, and around 34°C on the western coast and in the higher mountains.

Tonight, the weather will remain mostly clear, although some patchy mist and low cloud may form locally in the east. Winds will be mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, light and occasionally locally up to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will drop to around 25°C inland and along the coasts, and to 23°C in the higher mountainous areas.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday will all be mostly clear. Temperatures on Thursday will rise slightly, and will remain at similar levels through Saturday, continuing to stay significantly above average climatic values.
