Explosions in Kyiv; countrywide alert declared

Date:

Ukrainian authorities declared a nationwide alert on Monday morning due to potential Russian airstrikes as a Russian missile attack on Kyiv was reported to be underway.

Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine’s presidential administration, stated on Telegram, “President Putin of Russia is preparing to launch a missile attack on Kyiv.”

Earlier, the Ukrainian Air Force warned that at least one missile bound for Kyiv had entered Ukrainian airspace.

Russia has frequently targeted civilian areas in Ukraine since launching the war in February 2022.

On the night of Saturday into Sunday, Ukraine experienced 145 Russian drone strikes, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky describing this as a “record.”

On 26 August, Russia launched an attack involving more than 200 drones and missiles on Ukraine, which authorities reported resulted in seven deaths and damage to electricity production and distribution infrastructure, marking it as “the largest attack” of the war.

On Sunday morning, Moscow’s surrounding area was itself targeted by an unprecedented drone attack since the start of the conflict. Approximately 34 drones were shot down, and one person was injured, according to Russian authorities.

In Kyiv on Monday, explosions were heard, as reported by Reuters journalists. According to Ukrainian forces, this was the first cruise missile attack on Kyiv in over two months.

“The air defence forces are operational. Stay in shelters,” Kyiv’s municipality urged on Telegram.

No casualties have been reported so far.
