The smoking rate in Cyprus stood at 22.6% among people aged 16 and over in 2025, remaining significantly higher than the European Union average of 16.5%, according to figures published by Eurostat on Wednesday.
The figure represents a decrease of 0.7 percentage points from 2022, when 23.3% of people in Cyprus reported using tobacco and related products daily.
Eurostat’s data cover tobacco products as well as related products, including electronic cigarettes, nicotine pouches and heated tobacco products.
Men continue to smoke at much higher rates
In Cyprus, 32.3% of men aged 16 and over reported using tobacco or related products every day in 2025, compared with 13.3% of women.
Across the EU, 20.8% of men and 12.6% of women used tobacco and related products daily. Both figures were slightly lower than in 2022, when the corresponding rates were 22.2% and 13.1%.
EU average continues to decline
Across the bloc, 16.5% of people aged 16 and over used tobacco or related products daily in 2025, down from 17.5% in 2022.
Meanwhile, 77.5% of people in the EU reported not using such products or not having used them during the 12 months before the survey.
The highest proportion of daily users was recorded among people aged 35 to 49, at 21.3%. This was followed by those aged 25 to 34 (19.9%) and those aged 50 to 64 (19.8%).
The lowest rates were recorded among the youngest and oldest age groups, at 12.1% and 9.1%, respectively.
Bulgaria tops EU rankings
Among EU member states, Bulgaria recorded the highest rate of daily tobacco and related product use at 26.3%, followed by Sweden with 23.9% and Croatia with 23.6%.
The lowest rates were reported in the Netherlands (9.9%), Ireland (11.7%), Belgium (13.6%) and Luxembourg (13.8%).
According to Eurostat, 17 EU countries recorded declines in daily tobacco and related product use between 2022 and 2025.
The largest decreases were seen in Spain and Luxembourg, where rates fell by 2.1 percentage points. The biggest increases were recorded in Croatia and Lithuania, where daily use rose by 2.7 percentage points.
