Europe launches diplomatic push to restrain Trump from Iran strike

Date:

Europe launches diplomatic push to restrain Trump from Iran strike, as world leaders scramble to contain a conflict teetering between open war and fragile diplomacy. One week after Israel’s initial strike on Iranian soil, tensions remain high, with both sides suffering losses and the threat of further escalation looming.

According to the White House, President Trump will decide “within the next two weeks” whether the United States will become militarily involved in the Israel–Iran conflict. Officials say Trump believes there is still a “genuine opportunity for negotiations.”

In a joint appearance at the White House on Thursday, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated there was “a narrow window for a diplomatic solution,” following meetings with his U.S. counterpart, Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Both governments indicated cautious optimism that dialogue with Tehran might prevent a wider regional war.

Later today, the United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency session, while foreign ministers from France, Germany, and the UK- known collectively as the E3- are expected to meet with Iran’s Foreign Minister and chief nuclear negotiator. The meeting, also involving the EU’s top diplomat, aims to revive diplomatic channels and avoid further escalation. European governments are making urgent appeals for de-escalation and dialogue.

Although Iran’s nuclear facilities suffered significant damage in the Israeli strike, intelligence reports confirm they were not completely destroyed. Iran has yet to issue updated casualty figures following the attacks, but over 270 people were reported injured across Israel from Iranian rocket fire on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Israel’s Defence Minister has stated that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei “can no longer be allowed to exist,” following a controversial Israeli strike that hit a hospital. Tehran claims the intended target was a nearby military installation.

With nuclear tensions rising and rhetoric hardening on both sides, the coming days may determine whether the region moves toward diplomacy, or spirals into war.
