EU backs Cyprus-British Bases talks
President Nikos Christodoulides secured a significant reference in the final conclusions of the European Council on Thursday evening, ensuring strong EU backing for opening discussions with the United Kingdom on the British Bases in Cyprus. The European Union expressed readiness to support a Cyprus-British dialogue.
Regional security and humanitarian concerns
The conclusions also included references to ongoing regional issues. The EU condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling on Israel to allow unimpeded aid distribution, including via the Cypriot sea corridor, and to comply with international law to protect civilians.
Regarding EU defence and security, the Council highlighted threats from Russia, Belarus, Iran, and the Middle East, reaffirming that the defence of all EU borders contributes to Europe’s overall security.
Christodoulides addresses EU sceptics
During the summit, Christodoulides responded to EU circles asserting that the conflict in Iran is not Europe’s concern, notably countering comments by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas. Government sources said his interventions highlighted the direct impact of regional crises on Cyprus, a full EU member.
Preparations for Article 42.7
Christodoulides emphasised the importance of Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty, noting that while Cyprus did not request activation, the immediate support from countries including Greece, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands demonstrated its practical significance. He highlighted the positive responses from EU leaders including Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa.
Corriere della Sera interview
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Christodoulides called for an EU-led de-escalation initiative in the Middle East, stressing Cyprus’ role as a safe regional hub and the importance of showing active engagement to neighbouring countries. He praised Italy and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for early support.
Incident at Akrotiri
During his address to EU leaders, Christodoulides received an alert about an incident at Akrotiri. He informed the Council in real time, underscoring the importance of dialogue with the British Government regarding the status of the British Bases once the Middle East conflict ends.
