Leaders meet for key budget talks
The EU summit discussions continue on Friday in Nicosia, as the informal European Council under the Cypriot Presidency enters its final day, focusing on the new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).
President Nikos Christodoulides is set to welcome EU heads of state or government at the Filoxenia Conference Centre at 08:35. Leaders will hold consultations on the new EU budget framework, aiming to provide political direction and advance negotiations towards a possible agreement by the end of the year.
A joint press conference by the President of the European Council, the President of Cyprus, and the President of the European Commission is scheduled for 12:10.
Regional leaders join discussions
Later in the day, President Christodoulides will receive regional leaders, including representatives from Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
A joint session and working lunch between EU leaders and regional partners will begin at 13:10, followed by statements to the press at 15:40 from Cyprus, the EU, and participating partners.
According to reports, bilateral meetings are also expected between President Christodoulides and the Presidents of Egypt and Lebanon on the sidelines of the summit.
Focus on geopolitics and energy
On Thursday, President Christodoulides hosted EU leaders, along with the Presidents of the European Commission and European Council, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Ayia Napa Marina.
During the working dinner, leaders discussed geopolitical developments and the EU’s role in de-escalation efforts. They also addressed the Union’s readiness to respond to security challenges, including aspects linked to Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty, which covers mutual defence.
Energy impacts and how the EU can utilise available tools to respond to emerging challenges were also high on the agenda.
