A high-level European Union delegation is travelling to Ankara on Tuesday, 30 June, for EU-Turkey talks with senior Turkish officials, according to reports in the Turkish press.
High-level EU presence in Ankara
The delegation includes EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, and Home Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner.
They are expected to hold meetings with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek, and Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu.
The visit comes ahead of the NATO Summit scheduled for 7–8 July and is seen as part of renewed diplomatic engagement between the two sides.
Agenda includes regional and bilateral issues
The EU-Turkey talks are expected to cover key international issues, including developments in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, EU enlargement policy, migration cooperation, connectivity projects, and visa liberalisation for Turkish citizens.
Although formal accession negotiations remain effectively frozen, both sides continue to maintain dialogue on areas of mutual interest.
Cyprus among key discussion points
The Cyprus issue is also expected to feature in the discussions, as it continues to be a major sticking point in EU–Turkey relations.
EU officials are expected to deliver messages on the matter during the meetings in Ankara, although no breakthrough is anticipated.
Diplomatic timing and context
The visit coincides with the final day of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, highlighting the broader regional diplomatic context.
While Turkey’s EU accession process remains stalled, Brussels is seeking to preserve cooperation in strategic areas such as migration management and regional stability.
