Erasmus+ programme in Cyprus tackles gender-based violence

Date:

Youth unite against domestic violence

The European Erasmus+ programme “Youth United Against Domestic Violence” is currently taking place in Cyprus, bringing together 30 youth and youth workers from Cyprus, Poland, and Denmark. Hosted at the Journalism Village in Pervolia, Larnaca, the initiative runs from 18 to 22 March 2026. The selected countries reflect the sequential EU Council Presidencies they hold.

Workshops and learning activities

Participants engage in hands-on workshops, discussions, and educational activities aimed at raising awareness about gender-based and domestic violence. They build self-confidence and learn how to “break the silence” when witnessing or experiencing abuse. The programme also provides knowledge about women’s rights, available support mechanisms, and effective intervention methods.

Empowering women and promoting equality

The initiative aims to empower women, combat gender stereotypes, and foster a society where equality, respect, and human dignity are non-negotiable values. Activities include meetings with Gender Equality Commissioner Josie Christodoulou, officials from the Welfare Office, SPAVO, and Hope for Children. Participants exchange experiences and best practices on violence prevention, promoting equality, and enhancing women’s role in society.

Addressing a global issue

Globally, one in three women experiences physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner. The UN recognises gender-based violence as one of the most severe human rights violations, impacting women, children, and society. In Cyprus, one in four women will face gender-based violence in her lifetime, according to data supported by CEDAW and the UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Education as a tool for change

Programs like Erasmus+ use education to promote equality, critical thinking, empathy, and humanitarian values, contributing to the gradual elimination of stereotypes and discrimination. Teaching young people from an early age that all genders are equal lays the foundation for a society free from violence and inequality.
