Cyprus remains transfixed by the “Emily Thompson” X account that ignited the biggest political crisis of President Nikos Christodoulides’ three-year term with yesterday’s video publication.
The account joined X in July 2022, although its first visible post appeared on October 22, 2024. It gained verified status with a blue tick sometime in 2025.
Currently, 1,343 accounts follow “Emily Thompson,” while the account follows 967 others. The profile picture displays a Ukraine flag, and the listed location is the United Kingdom.
The bio identifies the user as an “independent researcher, analyst, and lecturer focusing mainly on US domestic and foreign policy.” Fact Check Cyprus confirms no public, verifiable evidence exists to identify the real person behind this account.
Repetitive bot-like activity pattern
Before its recent Cyprus posts, the account primarily shared reposts rather than original content. These reposts featured strikingly repetitive captions such as “exhausting,” “well well well,” “saving this for later,” “hmmmm,” “wowowow,” and “there’s never enough time to read all this great work.”
“Emily Thompson” links to articles on thethinkingconservative.com that purportedly carry her byline. However, the accompanying author photograph appears artificial, likely AI-generated or heavily manipulated upon close examination.

Intense three-day Cyprus focus
The account’s first Cyprus reference appeared on January 6, 2026. That post highlighted the irony of divided Cyprus leading the EU Council Presidency in 2026, noting new northern leadership under Tufan Erhurman and momentum in UN Confidence Building Measures. It speculated whether energy ties and dialogue could finally bridge the divide.

On January 7, a second Cyprus post celebrated the Presidency’s launch with President Christodoulides hosting Zelensky in Nicosia under the motto “An Autonomous Union, Open to the World.” The post referenced Erhurman’s pro-federation stance, recent UN talks building on 2025 Geneva agreements and a New York meeting, and shared energy interests like the Aphrodite field and EastMed synergies as potential dialogue catalysts.

In the comments, “Emily Thompson” shared an AI-generated image showing Zelensky posing before a fabricated Cyprus EU Presidency poster featuring EU, Greek, and Cypriot flags against a Turkish background.

Climactic Video Publication
The account’s final post on January 8 delivered the explosive video now shaking the Presidential Palace, featuring alleged conversations about campaign funding exceeding legal limits, investor access protocols, and First Lady fund contributions.
