Electricity supply in Cyprus holding, but margins are tight

Date:

Cyprus is currently managing to meet demand for electricity despite the extreme heat, according to the Transmission System Operator (TSO), but any savings made by the public are critical to the the electricity supply in Cyprus, to avoid blackouts.

Speaking to CNA, TSO spokesperson Chara Kousiappa said the country is using every available production unit to meet demand, which peaked on Monday at 1190 megawatts and again yesterday at 1188 MW around 14:15- just shy of last year’s record of 1294 MW.

The electricity supply in Cyprus remains stable for now, but with limited operational reserve. “If we lose even one more conventional unit, we may not be able to cover demand,” Kousiappa warned. In such cases, brief rotating power cuts might be necessary, especially between 6–9pm, when solar energy drops off and reliance shifts almost entirely to conventional production.

Thankfully, peak demand occurs midday when solar production is high, meeting up to 50% of demand. Today’s total demand is expected to hit around 1200 MW, with 1000 MW during the evening peak.

The public is urged to avoid non-essential energy use between 6–9pm, such as running washing machines, dryers, or using air conditioners in unused rooms.

Kousiappa stressed this is not yet an emergency, but small changes in household usage can help prevent strain on the grid. One 60 MW unit at Dhekelia is undergoing urgent repair to help meet anticipated spikes on Thursday.

Currently, no electricity is flowing between the Republic and the occupied side, in line with a mutual agreement for zero exchange during this high-demand period.
