Easter market in Cyprus stays stable despite price concerns

Date:

No shortages or panic needed

Andreas Chatziadamou, Executive Secretary of the Pan-Cyprian Supermarket Association, told CNA on Tuesday that the Easter table is safe. Claims of soaring prices and shortages are not supported by current market data.

Only liquefied gas rises

The only significant increase observed concerns liquefied gas, which rose by €4.5 per cylinder. For other essential products, including lamb, prices have remained largely stable.

Lamb prices under control

Chatziadamou addressed rumours of lamb prices reaching €20 per kilo, calling them “completely disconnected from reality.” He added that as Holy Week approaches, supermarket promotions usually reduce prices, helping consumers.

Supermarkets will absorb some cost pressures, lowering profit margins to maintain affordability. The association also warned against profiteering along the supply chain and urged all participants to act responsibly.

Adequate supply guaranteed

While some pressure exists, Chatziadamou confirmed that supply can meet demand. Supermarkets maintain open lines with suppliers in Cyprus, Greece, and Europe, with imports ready if needed.

He also reassured that imported products meet strict food safety protocols, ensuring no quality compromise.

Easter table safe and affordable

Chatziadamou concluded that the Easter market will remain similar to last year in both supply and pricing. He expects the coming days to show that recent panic was exaggerated compared to the actual market situation.
