Police step up patrols nationwide
Easter bonfire checks (lambratzia) have intensified across Cyprus, with police carrying out increased patrols and inspections in all districts to prevent the use of firecrackers, illegal bonfires, and youth delinquency.
Operations continued throughout the day and overnight, with officers responding to multiple incidents involving fires in open areas.
Molotov cocktails found in Limassol
In Limassol district, police discovered three improvised incendiary devices, commonly known as Molotov cocktails, in an open area near a church. The items were seized for further examination.
Officers also responded to several fire incidents, with members of the Fire Service assisting in extinguishing flames. In addition, wood collected for Easter bonfires was found in five rubbish bins and removed with the assistance of Limassol Municipality crews.
Fire incidents and firecrackers in Nicosia
In Nicosia district, police responded to a number of cases involving the use of firecrackers and the lighting of fires. Fire Service personnel were called in to control the situation.
Authorities also located and removed quantities of wood intended for bonfires in two separate cases, handing them over to local authorities.
No serious incidents in other districts
Police in Famagusta, Larnaca, Paphos, and the Morphou area conducted intensified patrols and checks, with no serious incidents reported.
Ongoing efforts to ensure public safety
Authorities say police presence will remain increased across all districts, with targeted actions aimed at preventing dangerous behaviour and enhancing public safety.
The public is urged to act responsibly and cooperate with authorities during the Easter period.
