Cyprus Police have issued a road safety warning reminding drivers of their obligation to place a warning triangle when their vehicle becomes stationary on the hard shoulder of a motorway.
Authorities stressed that failing to display the required warning sign creates serious risks for road users and increases the likelihood of traffic collisions.
Warning signs often missing
According to the police announcement, several drivers have recently been failing to place the red reflective triangular warning sign when leaving their vehicles stopped on the motorway hard shoulder for any reason.
Police said the absence of proper warning signage significantly increases the danger of accidents.
Under current legislation, when a vehicle is stopped on the motorway hard shoulder or on roads outside built-up areas, the driver must place the red reflective triangle approximately 50 metres behind the vehicle.
In built-up areas, the corresponding distance is approximately six metres.
Drivers urged to contact police in emergencies
Police clarified that if any part of a vehicle extends into motorway traffic lanes, the authorities must be notified immediately.
The driver or person responsible for the vehicle must then follow the instructions provided by police officers.
Authorities also reminded drivers that when a vehicle stops on a motorway due to mechanical failure or another emergency, it must be moved to the hard shoulder as soon as possible.
The vehicle must not remain there for more than 24 hours, and no part of it should obstruct or endanger other road users.
€50 fine for failing to display triangle
Cyprus Police noted that failing to place the reflective warning triangle is an out-of-court offence and is punishable by a €50 fine.
