Construction work started on a complete rebuild of the British High Commission in Nicosia. Cypriot company Atlas Pantou serves as main contractor for the project, which exceeds €40 million in cost.
The UK describes it as the largest ongoing project in its global diplomatic portfolio.
Historic location, modern design
The new complex rises on the existing site, part of the former Central Prisons area. It will feature:
- Modern office building
- Enhanced security facilities
- Official residence of the High Commissioner
- Fully carbon-neutral infrastructure
Existing buildings will remain operational during construction. Temporary entrances and access arrangements ensure uninterrupted consular services.
Diplomatic significance
British High Commissioner Michael Tatham called the project a “major upgrade”. He said it reflects London’s commitment to close cooperation with Cyprus.
“Every new building marks change and moving away from the past,” Tatham noted. He expressed eagerness to welcome Cypriot partners to the completed facility.
Completion is scheduled for November 2028.
