DVB-T2 replaces Velister from July 1 – What’s changing

Date:

Cyprus is set to undergo a major change in terrestrial television broadcasting from July 1, as the Velister platform ceases operations and is replaced by the DVB-T2 system, the next generation of digital television already used across several European countries.

The move to DVB-T2 in Cyprus means television channels will broadcast on new frequencies, aiming to improve picture and sound quality while making more efficient use of the available frequency spectrum.

According to the relevant authorities, the upgrade aligns Cyprus with modern European broadcasting standards and is expected to enhance overall viewing experience.

What viewers need to know

Subscribers to subscription-based platforms such as Cytavision, Cablenet and Primetel will not need to take any action, as SIGMA is already available in high definition through these services.

However, viewers receiving television via terrestrial antenna will need to check whether their equipment supports the DVB-T2 standard.

If the television is compatible, a simple rescan of channels through manual tuning on frequencies 35 and 48 will be required.

Equipment upgrade may be required

If the device does not support DVB-T2, viewers will need either a compatible external decoder, costing approximately €25–€35, or a newer television set.

Authorities note that most televisions purchased within the last decade are already compatible with the new system.

Improved quality and future-ready broadcasting

The DVB-T2 transition is expected to bring several benefits, including higher quality picture and sound, the potential for more channels, and the adoption of modern European broadcasting standards.

To watch major broadcasts such as the World Cup in full quality via SIGMA, viewers are advised to use Full HD (1920×1080) televisions or higher, while 4K Ultra HD sets fully support Full HD content.

Public advisory

Authorities are urging the public to check their equipment in advance to avoid reception issues after Velister ceases operations at the end of June.
