Netanyahu rejects Trump’s latest 15-point Gaza peace plan

Date:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his opposition to US President Donald Trump’s latest peace plan for the Gaza Strip during televised remarks to his right-wing government on Sunday.

The Israeli military has effectively halted its attacks in the area following pressure from President Trump.

“Israel rejects the 15-point document. The IDF will not carry out any withdrawal until Hamas is genuinely disarmed and will continue to prevent threats against our forces and our citizens,” Netanyahu said during a Cabinet meeting, referring to the Israel Defense Forces.

Netanyahu is currently on the campaign trail as he seeks re-election in the October 27 elections.

At the same time, he faces pressure from far-right ministers who have expressed frustration over concessions regarding the Gaza Strip, as well as from Trump, a key military supporter of Israel who is seeking progress towards ending the conflict through his 15-point peace proposal.

A source familiar with Israel’s position said Jerusalem had agreed that its military would take action in Gaza only in response to what it considers immediate threats.

Under the arrangement, Israel would also refrain from carrying out targeted killings, which had previously taken place on an almost daily basis.
