A drunk police officer is under criminal and disciplinary investigation following a three-car collision near Nicosia General Hospital that left two vehicles destroyed by fire.
The crash happened at around 8am on Thursday at the roundabout outside the hospital.
Three vehicles involved
According to police, a car driven by a 44-year-old special constable, who was off duty at the time, struck a vehicle being driven by a 43-year-old woman under circumstances that remain under investigation.
The woman’s car was then pushed forward into a third vehicle driven by a 38-year-old man.
The collision caused the vehicles driven by the 44-year-old officer and the 43-year-old woman to catch fire. Both cars were completely destroyed, while the third vehicle sustained damage to its rear.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze.
Driver tests positive for alcohol
All three drivers were taken by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital, where they received first aid.
Breathalyser tests were carried out on all three drivers. The drunk police officer recorded a final reading of 59μg, well above the legal limit of 22μg.
Further checks also found that the 44-year-old was driving without a valid certificate of insurance.
