21-year-old arrested during police checks
A 21-year-old man was arrested in Nicosia on Thursday night after police found a small quantity of a white powder believed to be cocaine, weighing approximately 1.8 grams.
The arrest was made as part of ongoing police operations targeting the use of firecrackers and the lighting of Easter bonfires.
According to police, the suspect was spotted at around 9:20pm sitting on a parked motorcycle. Officers also discovered 23 firecrackers near the vehicle, which were seized.
Additional traffic offences under investigation
Authorities are also investigating traffic offences involving the 21-year-old. The motorcycle he was using had been declared immobilised, lacked a valid roadworthiness certificate, and the suspect does not hold a driving licence.
Firecrackers and knife found in Paphos
In a separate incident in the Paphos district, police officers conducting checks at around 10:00pm discovered a bag left in an open area containing 15 firecrackers—five homemade and ten factory-made.
A knife was also found alongside the firecrackers and was confiscated.
Increased patrols across all districts
Police confirmed that intensified patrols and checks continued throughout the day and overnight across all districts, aiming to prevent the use of firecrackers, the lighting of bonfires, and youth delinquency.
Patrol units responded to multiple incidents involving fires and firecrackers, while large quantities of wood and tyres intended for bonfires were also located and removed, with the assistance of local authorities.
Authorities urge public responsibility
In several cases, the Fire Service was called to assist in extinguishing fires.
Police also carried out checks on groups of young people gathering for bonfires. Where minors were identified, their parents were notified and asked to collect them.
Authorities stressed that increased presence and targeted actions will continue nationwide, urging the public to act responsibly and cooperate with officials to ensure public safety.
