Driver arrested after hitting road worker, tests positive for drugs

A 37-year-old driver has been arrested following a positive preliminary drug test in connection with a serious collision on the Paphos–Limassol highway on Thursday, in which a 24-year-old road worker was critically injured.

According to the Cyprus Police, the driver was taken into custody after preliminary testing indicated the presence of narcotics.

Incident occurred during roadworks

The collision happened at around 9:40 am near Sotira, when the vehicle driven by the 37-year-old, under circumstances still under investigation, struck the 24-year-old worker who was carrying out duties at a roadworks site on the motorway.

The vehicle then collided with a large illuminated warning arrow before coming to a stop.

Worker in critical condition

The injured 24-year-old was taken to Limassol General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with multiple injuries and remains in an extremely critical condition.

Ongoing police investigation

Traffic Police in Limassol and Episkopi Police Station are continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the highway collision.

Authorities are examining all factors, including driver behaviour and road safety conditions at the time of the incident.
