Doria Varoshiotou: Removed from court by Constitutional ruling

Date:

The Supreme Constitutional Court of Cyprus, meeting as the Appellate Secondary Judicial Council, dismissed Doria Varoshiotou’s appeal against the Supreme Judicial Council’s decision to deny her permanent appointment as a district judge. The ruling passed 5‑3.

Last June, the Supreme Judicial Council informed Varoshiotou that it would not confirm her appointment after she completed her two-year probation. On 8 July 2025, she challenged the decision in court.

The Supreme Constitutional Court confirmed the Council’s decision, noting that Varoshiotou knew her role was probationary and had taken the judicial oath. The court emphasised that the Council has the authority to deny permanent status, and the probationary appointment cannot be legally contested.

The court also highlighted errors Varoshiotou made during an inquest into the death of National Guard soldier Thanasis Nicolaou. These errors appear in the Supreme Court’s ruling after forensic pathologist Panikos Stavrianos requested the inquest report annulled.

The court read the majority decision first during the proceedings.
