Soldiers deployed to Greenland in January
Danish soldiers sent to Greenland in January were reportedly ready to destroy key airport runways amid fears that US President Donald Trump could attempt to invade the Arctic island, according to Denmark’s public broadcaster DR.
Preparations included medical readiness
DR reported that blood supplies were also brought to treat potential casualties, citing sources in the Danish government, military, and European allies. The Financial Times confirmed the account with two European officials.
A senior Danish military official told the BBC that only a small number of people were aware of the operation due to security reasons. The Danish defence ministry declined to comment.
Tensions over Greenland
Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of Denmark, has been at the centre of disputes between Washington and European allies. President Trump repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring the island, which was rejected by Greenland’s government and Denmark.
Allies’ concern
The report underscores concerns among NATO allies about Arctic security and the potential implications of US ambitions in the region.
