Cyprus: young people obtain nicotine pouches from kiosks

Date:

Nicotine pouches are being freely distributed on the market, causing concern among parents.

Elena Panayiotopoulou, Director of the Pharmaceutical Services, appeared on Protoselido, stating that these pouches are harmful and are primarily consumed by young people. “They are sublingual, meaning you place them under your tongue, and the nicotine is absorbed through the mouth’s mucous membrane.”

She noted that someone can be taking in nicotine without others noticing. “Unfortunately, young people are using these. The problem is that the nicotine dose is higher than in a regular cigarette, leading young people to experience fainting, dizziness, and vomiting.” She added that the body cannot tolerate these products.

She emphasised that the Pharmaceutical Services brought the matter to the Medicines Council, which decided that these products are classified as pharmaceuticals and are strictly regulated. “Sales in kiosks are strictly prohibited.”

She stated that an operation would begin with the police to control the market for such products. “They are very dangerous for young people and everyone.”

In conclusion, she said that these products should not be circulating.
