Cyprus tops world in voluntary blood donation

Date:

Cyprus ranks first worldwide, in proportion to its population, in the field of voluntary blood donation, the Ministry of Health said on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, observed on 14 June.

The Ministry highlighted that the country continues to serve as an international example in non-remunerated blood donation, underlining the strong sense of solidarity and social responsibility among Cypriot citizens.

Over 74,000 blood units collected

According to official data, Cyprus collected 74,279 units of blood, placing it at the top globally on a per capita basis.

The Ministry said this achievement reflects the sustained and active participation of volunteer donors, who form a key pillar in ensuring adequate blood supplies and the smooth operation of the healthcare system.

Lifesaving impact of donors

Authorities stressed that every unit of blood can help save up to three lives, supporting patients in need of transfusions, accident victims, surgical cases, and individuals with serious or chronic conditions.

The message of this year’s World Health Organization campaign, “A Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.”, was highlighted as a reminder of the power of voluntary blood donation.

Call for continued participation

The Ministry of Health and the Blood Centre expressed gratitude to all voluntary blood and platelet donors in Cyprus for their selfless contribution, which provides hope and life to thousands of people.

At the same time, they called on citizens who are eligible to donate to follow the example of thousands of volunteers and further strengthen this vital social resource.

A culture of solidarity

Officials noted that each donor represents a link in a chain of life that connects people, strengthens social cohesion, and promotes a culture of giving.

The Ministry concluded by paying tribute to all donors, thanking them for their invaluable contribution to society.
