Holguín meets both leaders on Friday
UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín, is continuing a new round of Cyprus talks on Friday with separate meetings involving President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.
Holguín is scheduled to meet Erhürman at 3pm in the turkish occupied areas, according to an announcement from his office. The meeting was originally expected to take place on Saturday.
Later in the afternoon, at 5pm, the UN envoy will hold a separate meeting with President Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace.
Preparations underway for multilateral meeting
The latest Cyprus talks follow Holguín’s first separate meetings with the two leaders earlier this week.
On Tuesday, she also held individual discussions with the negotiators from both sides. According to reports, the possibility of a joint meeting between the negotiators was not discussed during those contacts.
Sources told CNA that discussions remain focused on preparations for an informal multilateral meeting expected to take place in late July or early August.
Focus remains on substance
According to the same sources, current Cyprus talks are centred exclusively on substantive issues linked to the upcoming meeting.
Confidence-building measures are not currently part of the discussions, with efforts instead focused on shaping the framework and agenda for the informal multilateral gathering.
The meetings form part of ongoing UN efforts to maintain momentum in the Cyprus issue and prepare the ground for further engagement between the two sides.
