Cyprus has maintained increased preventive security measures in recent months amid heightened regional tensions, a competent source told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), responding to a Financial Times report that the island could be among Iran’s potential targets for retaliation.
Cyprus monitoring developments closely
“We have had increased preventive measures all these months,” the source told CNA, adding that the authorities are “closely monitoring developments”.
The source also noted that four Greek F-16 fighter jets and the Greek frigate Nikiforos Fokas are currently in Cyprus.
The comments came after a Financial Times report said Iran had considered targeting US military facilities in Europe if US President Donald Trump escalates the war.
Cyprus among potential targets
The newspaper cited two sources said to be familiar with internal discussions in Iran, who claimed that Iranian forces had considered targeting US facilities in southeastern European countries.
One potential target mentioned was Bulgaria, which approved the use of Bezmer air base by US aerial refuelling aircraft last month.
One of the sources also said Cyprus could be among the potential targets for retaliation in the event of another US attack.
The report noted that a British military base in Cyprus was targeted by a drone in March.
The latest developments come amid continued regional tensions and concerns over the potential expansion of the conflict.
