Changes in self-consumption framework
Fanos Karantonis, president of the Association of Renewable Energy Enterprises, explained on the show “Protoselido” the updates to the self-consumption framework in Cyprus, the challenges facing the energy system, and the active role of consumers.
Previously, until 2024, excess energy was zeroed every 12 months. Surpluses were carried forward bi-monthly, and any unused energy by February-March would be cleared. This system aimed to allow consumers to cover their own energy needs within a year, with the timing chosen to match seasonal production peaks.
New 36-month cycle
The 2024 regulation introduced a 36-month settlement cycle, not rolling but fixed, starting February-March 2026, then 2029, and 2032. Karantonis noted that this approach better aligns energy production and consumption over a longer period.
Storage and batteries
Regarding energy storage, Karantonis said batteries will be introduced to reduce cuts on excess energy, though they will not eliminate them entirely. With about 100,000 properties in Cyprus benefiting from solar production, the system faces pressure, particularly when production occurs while consumers are away.
Consumers are encouraged to actively participate by shifting loads and using solar energy as it is generated. Small home batteries could be used for essential devices, supporting autonomy and efficiency.
Investments and energy independence
Karantonis highlighted that batteries are an investment, but the main benefit is energy independence, shielding users from market price fluctuations. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, energy costs rose, making self-consumption and storage increasingly valuable.
Responsible usage
He stressed that excessive energy production indicates oversizing, which strains the national grid and affects other users. Karantonis urged responsible use, viewing net metering as a social good to be respected for collective benefit.
