Cyprus carried out a scheduled SMS alert test for citizens at 19:00 on Wednesday, as part of the launch of a new mobile notification system, announced by the Interior Minister.
Some citizens received messages late
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that the messages were not received simultaneously by all users. While some received the alert exactly at 19:00, others received it a few minutes later.
Several citizens reported they had not received the test message at all by the end of the testing period.
Purpose of the test explained
The Ministry explained that the exercise aimed to evaluate how quickly the public could be informed if the SMS alert system is activated in an emergency.
Results showed that message delivery times varied depending on the telecommunications provider. Consequently, a significant number of subscribers received the messages on time, while others experienced delays.
Authorities plan improvements
The Deputy Ministry of Innovation, Research, and Digital Policy is already consulting with mobile operators to explore technical solutions that could reduce delivery times. The measure will be reassessed based on these findings.
