Cyprus military stance was clearly outlined by President Nikos Christodoulides in a recorded address following last night’s incident at the British Bases in Akrotiri.
He stressed that the Republic of Cyprus does not participate in any way and does not intend to become part of any military operation.
Drone impact at Akrotiri
The President stated that at 12:03am a Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicle struck within the military installations of the British Bases in Akrotiri, causing minor material damage.
He chose to address the public directly in light of the developments and to clarify what unfolded overnight.
National Security Council convened
From the first moment, all competent services of the Republic moved into full operational readiness, he said.
The President immediately convened the National Security Council to assess the situation. The Council remains in continuous consultation as developments unfold.
At the same time, he remains in constant contact with European leaders and leaders of other states regarding the evolving situation.
Commitment to stability and humanitarian role
President Christodoulides described the region as one of particular geopolitical instability, facing numerous challenges and an unprecedented crisis.
He reiterated Cyprus’ military stance, underlining that the country does not participate in any military action and has no intention of doing so.
“We remain committed to the humanitarian role we have served throughout this period, always as part of the solution and not part of the problem, and we will continue to act with the same responsibility,” he said.
He concluded by stating that the government is doing everything necessary, with the safety of the country and its citizens as its foremost priority.
