A Cyprus low pressure system will begin affecting the island from late tonight, as a barometric low centred over Greece moves eastwards, the Meteorological Department said.
The system is expected to bring rain, isolated thunderstorms and possible snowfall over higher ground, with strong winds and rough seas in several areas.
Increased cloud cover and local showers
Today, increased cloud cover is expected to give isolated showers, with a slight chance of a brief thunderstorm, mainly across the western half of the island and later in northern areas. On the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains, sleet or snowfall is possible.
Winds will blow mainly southwesterly to northwesterly at light to moderate levels, 3 to 4 Beaufort. Gradually, winds in windward areas will strengthen to moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort, while in the southeast they may temporarily reach very strong levels of 5 to 6 Beaufort.
The sea will be slight to rough. Temperatures will rise to around 20°C inland and along the coast, and to 9°C in the higher mountains.
Overnight deterioration
Tonight, isolated showers are expected, particularly over mountainous, western and southern areas. Later, mainly during the early morning hours, local showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast.
On the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains, sleet or snow cannot be ruled out. Winds will be southeasterly to southwesterly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort and locally strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort in windward areas. Gradually, they will strengthen to moderate to strong, and up to very strong, 6 Beaufort, in exposed locations.
The sea will become rough and later, in western areas, locally very rough. Temperatures will drop to 12°C inland, around 14°C along the coast and 6°C in the higher mountains.
Wednesday outlook
On Wednesday, the weather will be mostly cloudy with local showers and isolated thunderstorms. Conditions are expected to gradually improve in the afternoon, with phenomena weakening and becoming confined mainly to western parts of the island.
The area will be affected by a very strong to gale-force westerly airflow, which will weaken by evening. Snow or sleet is expected on the highest mountain peaks.
Thursday and Friday will see periods of locally increased cloud cover.
Temperatures on Wednesday will fall slightly, remaining just above average climatic values. A slight rise is expected again by Friday.
