Cyprus hiking trails standard published by CYS

Date:

The Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation (CYS) announced the publication of the new Cypriot Standard CYS 550:2025 – Design, Construction, Signage and Management of Hiking Trails: Requirements and Recommendations.

The national technical committee CYS/TC 28, chaired by the Department of Forests and supported by CYS as secretariat, developed the standard. Members included the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the Department of Environment, the Geological Survey Department, the Union of Cyprus Communities, the Troodos Development Company, and the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK).

What the standard covers

CYS 550:2025 sets out requirements and criteria for the general characteristics and difficulty levels of hiking trails.

It also establishes minimum requirements and recommendations for their design, construction, signage, and ongoing management. Regular maintenance ensures continued compliance, guaranteeing both aesthetic enjoyment of the natural environment and an appropriate level of safety and accessibility for users.

Who can use it

The standard applies to all hiking trails intended for walking activities that promote familiarity with the natural and cultural environment, highlight ecological and cultural features, and support the sustainable development of communities and regions.

The primary goal is to upgrade hiking trails and enhance the overall user experience.

Interested parties can obtain CYS 550 by contacting the CYS Information and Service Centre (CYS/ΚΕ.Π.Ε.).
