A Cyprus data leak has exposed personal details of citizens on the dark web, including names and home addresses, while authorities confirm that no banking or medical data has been compromised.
What information was leaked
Senior Electronic Communications Department officer Andronikos Kakkouras clarified the scope of the breach during an appearance on Sigma’s “Mesimeri kai Kati” programme.
He said the extracted data involved personal information submitted through a specific provider as part of the broadband subsidy scheme. The leaked material includes full names, residential addresses and, in some cases, contact details such as telephone numbers or email addresses.
No passwords or financial data exposed
Kakkouras stressed that passwords to the government portal were not leaked, and neither health records nor banking information formed part of the breach.
He explained that the intrusion did not result from a direct compromise of the central database. Instead, attackers obtained user credentials from one of the providers with authorised access to the platform, leading to the data leak.
Hacker traced to Spain
According to information from the Digital Security Authority, the suspected hacker is based in Spain. The individual reportedly published a sample of personal data affecting 30 people on the dark web in an apparent attempt to attract buyers.
So far, authorities have found no indication that the data has been purchased. However, officials note that full investigation in such environments remains particularly difficult. The case is still under examination, and affected citizens are expected to receive updates in the coming period.
