The Cyprus general strike scheduled for Thursday, 11 September 2025, will go ahead despite efforts to prevent it. From 11:00 to 14:00, many sectors of the country are expected to shut down, with the main demonstration taking place at noon outside the Ministry of Finance in Nicosia.
The strike will affect both the public and private sectors, as trade unions covering nearly all industries have confirmed participation.
Schools
The Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth announced that parents must collect children from schools at 11:00. Return bus routes will not operate, and parents of pupils in all-day or specialised schools will need to take children back themselves at 14:00. Meals will not be provided that day. Community kindergartens, which are privately run, will operate according to their employers’ instructions.
Airports
Airlines have already taken measures to minimise disruption, with a full announcement from Hermes expected later today.
Hospitals
Hospitals and outpatient clinics will operate until 11:00 and reopen after 14:00. Scheduled surgeries and appointments during the strike will be postponed, while essential staff will remain on duty.
Essential services
The following are classed as essential services and will continue to operate: electricity, water supply, telecommunications, hospitals, prisons, air traffic control, port operations, and emergency maintenance for the National Guard, police and fire service equipment.
Authorities emphasise that the Cyprus general strike will disrupt daily life significantly, but essential infrastructure will continue to function.
