Cyprus-based company sues Mike Tyson for more than $1.5 million

Date:

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is facing a $1.5 million lawsuit from a Cyprus-based company, according to a recent court filing cited by The Washington Post.

The company, Medier, which promotes the betting platform Rabona, filed the lawsuit in the High Court in London against Tyson and his company, Tyrannic, accusing them of breaching a contract signed in January. The contract was allegedly cancelled unlawfully to allow Tyson to participate in a fight with influencer Jake Paul, in collaboration with Netflix.

Medier is seeking the return of $800,000 paid to Tyson for services that were never delivered, along with an additional $729,000 for lost production and promotional costs.

The Tyson-Paul fight, held last month at AT&T Stadium before a crowd of 70,000 and streamed live on Netflix, earned Tyson $20 million. At age 58, Tyson lost the bout to 27-year-old Paul by unanimous decision after eight rounds.

Tyson’s legal team argues that Medier breached the contract by failing to secure his approval for promotional material.

The fight received mixed reviews, with Paul expressing ambitions to compete for a championship within the next two years. The event marked Netflix’s first live sports broadcast, drawing 60 million views.

Despite his defeat, Tyson praised Paul’s skills. Paul continues to build his boxing career, primarily facing retired athletes and non-professional boxers.
