CY-Alert system launches today – test messages set to begin

Date:

New public warning system activated

The CY-Alert system has been made available to the competent authorities starting Tuesday, 2 June, marking a major step in strengthening Cyprus’ emergency communication capabilities.

The system is designed to enhance operational readiness in emergency situations and disasters, while improving public information and protection in cases of imminent danger.

Real-time alerts to mobile phones

The CY-Alert system allows authorities to send immediate notifications to citizens located in affected or high-risk areas.

Alerts are delivered in real time to all compatible mobile devices within the designated zone, regardless of mobile provider or SIM card origin.

Importantly, the system does not require internet access or mobile data. Each alert is accompanied by a distinctive warning sound and strong vibration to ensure attention.

Strengthening civil protection

The launch of the CY-Alert system is considered a significant upgrade in Cyprus’ civil protection framework, particularly as the country faces increasing risks from wildfires, extreme weather events and other natural disasters.

The system aims to ensure faster and more accurate public communication during emergencies, enabling citizens to respond promptly to official instructions.

Upcoming test alerts

Authorities will carry out test alert exercises during June in selected areas to confirm system functionality under real conditions.

These tests are intended to ensure the system operates effectively ahead of full-scale use in emergency scenarios.

The scheduled test alerts will be sent as follows:

  • 2 June (11:00–12:00): Pissouri and Moniatis communities
  • 2 June (16:00–17:00): Psevdas community
  • 7 June (10:00–11:00): Argaka, Avgorou and Ora communities
  • 10 June (16:00–17:00): Phini and Kalopanagiotis communities
  • 15 June (15:00–16:00): Island-wide alert for a missing person exercise

The CY-Alert system messages will also be delivered to neighbouring communities in affected zones during testing.

Part of broader resilience strategy

The introduction of CY-Alert forms part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance national resilience against crises.

Officials say the focus remains on prevention, preparedness and the effective protection of the population in the face of growing environmental and security challenges.
