The Republic of Cyprus will officially launch the CY-Alert emergency warning system on 2 June 2026, allowing authorities to send real-time alerts to mobile phone users across the country during emergencies.
The system is based on Cell Broadcast technology and is designed to warn the public in situations where life, safety or public order may be at risk.
Test alerts to be sent over coming weeks
Authorities said trial exercises will take place over the next three weeks in real conditions.
Citizens may receive test notifications in both Greek and English, accompanied by a distinctive alarm sound and strong vibration, clearly marked as drills or tests.
For technical guidance and information about phone settings required to receive alerts, the public can contact the 1450 helpline starting from 27 May.
No internet or app required
Speaking during a joint press conference, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said the CY-Alert system strengthens state preparedness and enhances public protection during emergencies.
Deputy Minister for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou explained that the Cell Broadcast system sends alerts directly from mobile towers to all devices within a selected geographical area in real time.
The alerts do not require internet access or the installation of any application and function regardless of mobile provider or SIM card origin.
Privacy safeguards and key information
Authorities stressed that the system operates without collecting or storing personal or device data.
To receive alerts, users only need to ensure their smartphones are updated to the latest available Android or iOS software version.
Emergency notifications will be issued through the Cyprus Civil Defence using licensed mobile telecommunications networks.
Messages will include details about the emergency or threat, along with clear safety instructions or evacuation guidance for affected areas.
