Court reviews Doria Varosiotou’s dismissal appeal today

Date:

The Supreme Constitutional Court, sitting as the Secondary Judicial Review Council (ΑΔΔΣ), will today begin reviewing the appeal submitted by Doria Varosiotou against the termination of her appointment as a district judge.

The process started this morning at 9:30am and concerns an appeal Varosiotou filed on 8 July after the Supreme Judicial Council (ΑΔΣ) decided not to confirm her permanent appointment. She had initially been appointed as a temporary judge on 1 July 2023, but the Council found that she did not meet the necessary criteria and thus ended her appointment.

On 23 July, the ΑΔΔΣ rejected a request by Varosiotou to be reinstated in her post pending the outcome of the case. The Court ruled that issuing a decree to suspend the decision would effectively pre-judge the substance of the appeal — something not allowed at this interim stage. Her request had been submitted by her lawyer, Achilleas Demetriades.

The Supreme Judicial Council has also filed an objection to her appeal, and both parties have already submitted lengthy written arguments, which are now before the ΑΔΔΣ for consideration.

It is worth noting that Doria Varosiotou previously led the inquest into the death of Thanasis Nikolaou. Her findings, based on scientific evidence, concluded that the 26-year-old National Guardsman had been murdered and had not taken his own life.
