The Council of Ministers is expected to appoint a team of independent criminal investigators today to examine findings related to a report by the Anti-Corruption Authority concerning the book “Mafia State” by Makarios Drousiotis.
The corruption probe will be based on the authority’s conclusions, which identify possible criminal offences on a “balance of probabilities” standard.
Multi-member investigative team
According to reports, the team of investigators is expected to be multi-member and will carry out a detailed review of the findings and related evidence.
Officials are expected to assign the group the task of examining potential criminal liability arising from the case.
Findings of the Anti-Corruption Authority
The Anti-Corruption Authority’s report reportedly identifies possible criminal offences involving 15 natural and legal persons.
Among those named is former President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, according to the findings referenced in the report.
The conclusions are based on the “balance of probabilities” standard used in the authority’s assessment process.
Next steps in the process
Following the expected appointment of investigators, the case will move into a formal criminal investigation phase.
Authorities are expected to proceed with examining evidence and determining whether further legal action is warranted.
