Civil Defence recommendations for heavy rain and thunderstorms

Date:

The Civil Defence Force, following a relevant announcement by the Department of Meteorology regarding isolated severe thunderstorms mainly in mountainous areas, with the possibility of hail, issues the following recommendations to the public. The aim is to prevent and properly prepare in order to minimise risks and negative consequences:

Self-protection measures against flooding

  • Ensure that the drains outside your home or workplace are not blocked.
  • Make sure that the gutters on your premises are functioning properly.
  • If you have a basement in a vulnerable area at risk of flooding, dig a special water collection pit and install an automatic water pump. Remove valuable items or expensive equipment from the basement.
  • If you live on a plot with a yard, leave as much bare soil as possible to allow the ground to absorb water.
  • Secure objects that could be swept away or displaced by water (e.g. tanks, water heaters, etc.).
  • Repair any openings in boundary walls.
  • Prepare sandbags to prevent water from entering your property if it is located in an area at risk of flooding.
  • If you are informed of heavy rainfall, limit your movements and avoid working or staying in basements.

During a flood

If you are inside a building:

  • Leave any basement areas and move to a safe, elevated location.

If you are outdoors:

  • Do not attempt to cross flooded roads on foot, by car, bicycle, or motorcycle.
  • Stop and change direction if you find yourself on a flooded road.
  • Abandon your vehicle if it becomes immobilised, as it may be swept away or flooded.
  • Stay away from live power lines.
  • Do not approach areas where landslides have occurred.

After the flood

If you are outdoors:

  • Stay away from areas that have flooded or are likely to flood again in the coming hours, because: -> the flood may have altered the landscape of familiar areas,
-> there are dangers from broken road surfaces and steep areas, and
-> the water may be contaminated, having carried various items or animals.
  • Do not obstruct rescue teams.
  • Do not use the phone unless absolutely necessary.

Before starting restoration procedures:

  • Remember that the dangers from flooding do not end immediately after the water recedes.
  • Confirm with the relevant authorities that your area is safe and that you can return for restoration work.
  • Turn off electricity and water supply switches.
  • Wear closed shoes and suitable clothing to avoid injuries.
