Christodoulides meets UN peacekeeping chief
President Nikos Christodoulides has stressed that Cyprus talks cannot resume unless appropriate conditions are secured on the ground, particularly in the UN-controlled buffer zone.
He made the remarks on Tuesday morning at the Presidential Palace during a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix.
Preconditions for restarting negotiations
The President underlined that stable conditions in the buffer zone are a fundamental prerequisite for any return to negotiations on the Cyprus problem.
He said the issue of ground realities remains a key concern for Nicosia and something that must be addressed in coordination with the United Nations.
The message places the Cyprus talks at the centre of efforts to restart the stalled peace process.
UN calls for calm conditions
Jean-Pierre Lacroix thanked Cyprus for its continued support of UN peacekeeping efforts and reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to assisting the process.
He stressed that conditions on the ground must remain as calm as possible to support diplomatic progress and avoid undermining any future negotiations.
UNFICYP presence highlighted
The meeting was also attended by UNFICYP Special Representative and Head Khassim Diagne.
From the Cypriot side, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Presidential Press Office Director Viktoras Papadopoulos, Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou, and Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Maria Michael were present.
Ongoing diplomatic efforts
The discussions reflect continued diplomatic engagement between Cyprus and the United Nations as efforts continue to create the necessary conditions for restarting talks.
The emphasis on stability in the buffer zone remains central to progress in the Cyprus talks, according to both sides.
