President Nikos Christodoulides will meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and foreign leaders in Paris, where he arrived on Monday evening at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron to attend the French Armed Forces military parade on the Champs-Élysées marking France’s national day.
On Monday, the president met with members of the National Guard, who will take part in Tuesday’s French Armed Forces parade after receiving an invitation from the French military.
Cyprus National Guard to parade on Champs-Élysées
Speaking to members of the elite contingent in the presence of National Guard Chief Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou, Christodoulides said the honorary invitation to parade with the flag of the Republic of Cyprus on the Champs-Élysées before heads of state and government carries significant symbolism.
He said it also reflects the importance of the strategic partnership between Cyprus and France, with relations between the two countries at the highest possible level.
The president, who is expected to return to Cyprus late on Tuesday afternoon, is accompanied in Paris by Deputy Government Spokesman Yiannis Antoniou and government officials.
