President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides spoke by telephone today with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as efforts to resume substantive negotiations intensify.
President Christodoulides briefed the Greek Prime Minister on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and on today’s joint meeting he will hold with the Turkish Cypriot leader, in the presence of the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General. The aim focuses on creating conditions that will lead to the resumption of substantive negotiations from the point where they stopped.
The conversation also centred on the need to convene an expanded meeting on the Cyprus problem as soon as possible.
Nicosia and Athens maintain complete coordination and move steadily towards the unchanged common goal: resolving the Cyprus problem on the basis of United Nations Security Council Resolutions, the principles and values of the European Union and the European acquis.
President Christodoulides also informed Mr Mitsotakis about the two-hour meeting he held earlier today, in the presence of Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, with European Union Special Envoy for the Cyprus problem Johannes Hahn. During the meeting, they highlighted the role the European Union can play as a factor that possesses the political and institutional tools to support decisively the resumption and substantive progress of the process.
The EU’s active involvement represents not only a strategic choice of the Republic of Cyprus but also recognition that solving the Cyprus problem constitutes a European issue affecting the cohesion, stability and security of the entire Union.
