CBC warns of scam – Fake letter circulating under its name

Date:

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) is informing the public that under no circumstances does it ever request immediate payment of money from individual citizens, stressing that a letter currently in circulation is fraudulent.

Following previous scams involving the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, the Tax Department and other organisations falsely cited by fraudsters in attempts to deceive citizens and extract money, the Central Bank of Cyprus has now become the latest target.

In an announcement, the CBC warns that a fake letter is circulating bearing the Bank’s insignia and logos, demanding money from recipients. “The letter does not originate from the Central Bank of Cyprus and the matter has been reported to the competent authorities for investigation,” the CBC stated, adding that “at no time does the Central Bank request immediate payment of money from individuals.”

The public is therefore urged to exercise particular caution and, if they receive such a document, to contact the Cyprus Police immediately and notify the Central Bank of Cyprus.
