Casualties in Iran surpass 1,000

Widespread Israeli air strikes across Iran

Israel has intensified its military campaign against Iran, targeting security forces and key infrastructure on the fifth day of US-Israeli operations. Attacks have hit Tehran, Qom, western regions, and Isfahan province, damaging both military and residential areas, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency.

Buildings linked to the Basij, a volunteer paramilitary force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Iran’s internal security command were reportedly struck. The death toll since the assault began on Saturday has reached 1,045, Iranian state media confirmed.

Civilians caught in the crossfire

Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Vall, reporting from Tehran, highlighted the widespread impact on civilians. “There is a continuous, sustained campaign across the country that is not sparing any region, city or area,” he said. More than 6,000 people have been wounded, and around 300 children and adolescents have been hospitalised.

Impact on nuclear sites and funerals

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported visible damage near two buildings at the Isfahan nuclear site, but no facilities containing nuclear material were affected, and there is no risk of radiological release.

Plans for the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have been postponed, with logistical challenges cited by local authorities. Funeral arrangements are expected to draw large crowds, raising security concerns amid ongoing attacks.

Retaliation and regional tension

In response to Israeli and US strikes, Tehran has launched missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and US military bases across the Gulf. While most were intercepted, some missiles struck military and civilian infrastructure, and debris from intercepted missiles caused damage in residential areas.

Global reactions and US scrutiny

Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyad Abbas Araghchi criticised Trump’s handling of diplomacy, describing it as a betrayal. The US Senate recently rejected a resolution aimed at limiting Trump’s war powers, while experts suggest domestic political scrutiny will intensify as the conflict continues.
