Car ownership in Europe seen as luxury, survey finds

Date:

Car ownership in Europe is increasingly being viewed as a luxury rather than a necessity, according to a new survey, as rising costs continue to reshape driving habits and consumer choices across the continent.

The survey, conducted across seven European countries including France, Germany, Italy and Spain, found that 80% of respondents now consider car ownership a luxury item.

Despite this, 88% of drivers said they would not be able to travel as they wish without access to a car, highlighting continued dependence on private vehicles.

Rising cost of driving

The findings show that 95% of respondents believe driving has become increasingly expensive, with many citing fuel prices, maintenance and insurance as key pressures.

Around 57% of Europeans said a car is now their biggest household expense, while 64% have already reduced non-essential travel due to rising costs.

Impact on buying decisions

Cost is also strongly influencing purchasing behaviour, with 81% of respondents saying price is the most important factor when choosing their next vehicle.

Fuel efficiency, reliability and maintenance costs were also ranked as key considerations, while brand and style were significantly less important.

Shift towards electric vehicles

The survey indicates growing openness towards electric and hybrid vehicles, with 60% of respondents considering switching to electric or plug-in hybrid models.

Support for the planned ban on internal combustion engines from 2035 was also relatively strong, with 61% of Europeans in favour of the measure.

Changing mobility trends

The results highlight a broader shift in European mobility, where rising costs are forcing drivers to reconsider both car ownership and usage patterns.

While dependence on cars remains high, financial pressure is increasingly shaping transport choices across the continent.
