An explosion that occurred in a vehicle in Larnaca at around half past midnight is under investigation by the Police, with preliminary examinations indicating it was caused by an improvised explosive device.
Specifically, according to the Police, the explosion occurred in a car owned by a 74-year-old man but exclusively used by a 49-year-old woman. The vehicle was parked in the car park of a block of flats.
“Police and Fire Service officers arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire that broke out in the vehicle following the explosion,” the report states.
According to the preliminary findings, it is added that “the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device, and a plastic container was found which appears to contain flammable material.”
According to the Police, the explosion and fire caused minor damage to two other vehicles parked in the block’s car park, as well as to the building’s masonry.
Further examinations will be carried out this morning, while the Larnaca CID is investigating the case.
