Cannabis smuggling sentence for two after airport seizure

Date:

Two people have received a prison sentence after being convicted in a major cannabis smuggling case involving more than 17 kilograms of the drug.

According to a statement from the Cyprus Police, the Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court imposed a prison sentence of 11 years on a 66-year-old man and two and a half years on a 48-year-old woman for smuggling cannabis.

Court ruling and charges

The court found both defendants guilty of illegal importation and possession of drugs, as well as possession of drugs with intent to supply to other persons. The sentencing followed the completion of criminal proceedings linked to a coordinated operation by police and customs authorities.

Arrest at Larnaca airport

The two individuals were arrested on 7 June 2025 at Larnaca Airport. During baggage checks, carried out as part of targeted actions by the Cyprus Drug Law Enforcement Unit in cooperation with Customs Authorities, officers discovered approximately 17 kilos and 600 grams of cannabis in their luggage.

Authorities said the quantity of drugs seized pointed to trafficking activity, leading to the prosecution of the two suspects and ultimately to the cannabis smuggling sentence handed down by the court.
