Canada school shooting leaves 11 dead

Date:

A Canada school shooting in British Columbia has left 11 people dead, including the suspected gunman, police said.

Victims found at school and nearby

Police found seven victims inside the secondary school in the community of Tumbler Ridge. Officers also discovered two victims at a nearby home and linked the killings to the school attack.

Another victim died on the way to hospital, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said. Officers located the suspected gunman dead at the scene and believe he shot himself.

Investigators found no evidence of additional attackers and said residents no longer face danger.

Remote community in shock

Tumbler Ridge is a remote town of about 2,400 people in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, roughly 1,155 kilometres north-east of Vancouver.

Doctors examined 25 other people at the local health centre after the incident, according to police.

British Columbia Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger said she was thinking of the victims, their families and the wider community, adding that authorities would use every available resource in the investigation.

Prime minister cancels Europe visit

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he felt “shocked” by the “horrific” violence and decided to postpone a planned trip to Europe.

He had planned to attend the Munich Security Conference, where dozens of heads of state and ministers are due to gather.

Carney said Canadians were mourning lives changed forever and thanked security forces and first responders for their courage and selflessness.

Mass killings are rare in Canada, but this is the second such tragedy in British Columbia within a year. In April 2025, eleven people died in Vancouver when a driver rammed a vehicle into a crowd at a Filipino cultural event.
