Cabinet submits Thanasis Nicolaou report to Attorney General

Date:

The Cabinet is submitting today the report of two criminal investigators on the case of National Guardsman Thanasis Nicolaou to the Attorney General, after receiving it earlier. At the same time, the Cabinet will also provide a copy of the report to the soldier’s family, stated Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis following the conclusion of the Cabinet meeting.

In his statements after the meeting, Mr Letymbiotis said that the Cabinet was informed today about the submission of the report by the two criminal investigators regarding the investigation into any potential criminal offences related to the circumstances of the death of soldier Athanasios Nicolaou, who was found dead on 29 September 2005.

He noted that the criminal investigation by the two investigators was completed on 7 March 2025, which was the final deadline set by the Cabinet.

“The report was delivered today, Wednesday, 12 March, at 8:45 am by the criminal investigators to the Secretary of the Cabinet,” he said, adding that the Cabinet would forward the report to the Attorney General of the Republic today, in accordance with Article 113 of the Constitution, for the appropriate legal actions to be taken.

Furthermore, Mr Letymbiotis stated that the Cabinet decided, following a relevant request, to provide a copy of the report to the family of the deceased Thanasis.

Asked to comment on the fact that Thanasis’ mother does not want the report to be submitted to the Attorney General, Mr Letymbiotis clarified that the Cypriot Constitution is clear, and in an organised state, there is no alternative procedure. “This is the legal process. The President of the Republic has already had a telephone conversation with Mrs Andriana Nicolaou, informing her both about the procedure and the Cabinet’s decision to provide her with a copy of the report,” he said.
