Cabinet approves new National Breastfeeding Policy for 2026–2031

Date:

The Council of Ministers on Wednesday approved Cyprus’ new breastfeeding policy for the 2026-2031 period, aiming to strengthen the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding across the country.

Speaking after the Cabinet meeting, Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides described breastfeeding as one of the most important investments in public health, saying its benefits for infants, mothers, families and the healthcare system are well established through scientific evidence.

Framework aligned with WHO and UNICEF

The new breastfeeding policy introduces a modern and coordinated framework aligned with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.

Its objectives include increasing breastfeeding initiation, duration and exclusive breastfeeding rates by strengthening healthcare services, providing continuous training for health professionals, improving information available to families and creating a more supportive environment for mothers.

Breastfeeding facilities now mandatory

Charalambides also recalled that amendments to the law on the promotion and protection of breastfeeding came into force on 25 June, making it mandatory for public bodies and workplaces to provide suitable breastfeeding and breast milk expression facilities.

He said the measures form part of a broader effort to improve support for mothers and encourage breastfeeding throughout Cyprus.

“With the new national policy, we continue investing in children’s health, supporting mothers and their families, and creating a society that is truly breastfeeding-friendly,” the Health Minister said.
